Jaisalmer a city of yellow sandstone with a fort made famous by film maker Satyajit Ray in his movie SONAR fort KELLA & town of JAISALMER was founded by Maharawal Jaisal in the year 1156 AD after having shifted his capital from Ludharva (18 Kms away from Jaisalmer) to a safer place. The ruling family of the erstwhile Jaisalmer State belongs to Bhati Clan of Yadu Rajputs of Chandrawasnshi (Lunar) race who claim descent from Lord Krishna, the defied hero who ruled at Dwarka.
It was an important centre of trade during the medival periods as it lay in the centre of the land routes to central asia.
It lies in the heart of the Thar desert. The Indira Gandhi canal has changed the desert landscape to some extent and one can find greenery and mustard fields dotting the arid desert landscape.
Tall windmills with their lazily turning blades generating electricity for the state can be seen in abundance around this arid desert.
